What happens after the first appointment?
Leave with a next step you can explain back. Ask who will handle the questions that come later.

What are we deciding now, and what remains open?
When will we review the plan?
What information do you want me to bring to that review?
Which later visits, tests, or messages are included in the charge?
A follow-up is a later check on the plan. Ask how it will happen, rather than leaving with a vague “keep in touch.”
Find out who answers later questions
Medical-board guidance says you need a way to ask the person treating you questions after the visit.
That guidance is provided by the Federation of State Medical Boards, which is a group of licensing boards. Each state sets its own rules.
Ask how to send a health question and how to send a pharmacy question. Keep those details with your visit notes.
Ask how further checks will be arranged
Medical-board guidance calls for the person treating you to arrange any exam or tests needed for proper online care, or send you to someone who can.
Being sent to another doctor or service is called a referral. Ask who sends the information and what you need to arrange yourself.
For an urgent health problem, use the urgent-help note. Routine messages and later appointments serve a different purpose.
